The largest island in New England is an island called Marthas Vineyard. Sitting about 7 miles off of the Massachusetts coast and just south of Cape Cod, the island covers an area of about 240 square miles. The most popular places to stay on Marthas Vineyard are in the towns of Oaks Bluff and Vineyard Haven. These are also the two towns that most of the ferries servicing the island dock at. Oaks Bluff is very well-known for its entertainment and night life, and Vineyard Haven for its shopping. Bed and Breakfasts can be found in the old sea captains homes in Edgartown. Accommodations can also be found in Menemsha, Chilmark and West Tisbury on the upper end of the island. It is usually necessary to book reservations well ahead of visiting because of its popularity as a tourist attraction.

The economy of Marthas Vineyard depends heavily on tourism. The fact that the island is visited regularly by famous celebrities and people who are very wealthy helps to attract visitors. Many of these people own homes on the beaches. Tourism offices offer day trips and excursions to Chappaquiddick Island, which is close by.
